Many women wonder, If I’m already using a good moisturizer on my face, why should I add a facial serum to my skincare routine? Doesn’t the moisturizer already have everything my skin needs?
In order to answer the question, Why Do I Need To Use Serum With My Moisturizer? You should understand the difference between the two products.
What is the difference between moisturizer and serums?
A serum is different from a moisturizer mostly because of what it doesn’t contain. Moisturizers usually contain some sort of petrolatum or mineral oil. This is used in creams and lotions to help form a barrier on top of your skin, locking the moisturizing ingredients in and holding them there.
Serums are generally, but not always, water-based with no oil in them at all. They are all highly concentrated so a little goes a long way. They’re designed to be absorbed into the skin quickly… getting all of their good stuff deep into where it needs to go fast.
By adding a serum to your daily skincare routine, you’re allowing your skin to absorb the good stuff first, and then use a moisturizing lotion or cream to keep it there.
Should Everyone use a Serum with their Moisturizer?
Since everyone’s skin is different, there’s a different answer for everyone. But the short answer would be, no. Not everyone will benefit from adding serum to their skincare routine.
If you have very oily skin, you might try using ONLY a serum.
If you have a known skin condition like rosacea, or eczema, using serum might irritate your condition. You should be cautious about adding serum to your skincare routine. If you have this problem, you might be better off only using a moisturizer for sensitive skin.
If you have normal or dry skin, you should use a serum with a moisturizer afterwards.
Are Serums Worth the Additional Cost?
If you have the type of skin that can handle using a serum, then YES, it is totally worth the additional cost. Serums might feel expensive when you purchase them because they generally come in very small containers but since you don’t need to use that much per skincare session, they tend to last a long time.
How To Use Facial Serum
If you’re new to serums and would like to give one a try, follow these instructions to get the best results.
- After cleansing your face, apply a very small amount. With serums, remember, a little is all you need. The amount the size of a pea should do your entire face. Luckily, most serums come in bottles that are designed to only dispense small amounts.
- Give the serum time to penetrate before applying your moisturizer. If you’re skin is sensitive, allow for about 15 minutes before using your moisturizer.
Which Serum is Right for Me?
If you’re ready to incorporate serums into your skincare routine, you’ll want one that gives your skin what it needs.
